Telecommuting: Travel-less Work

With the rise of Internet, accessing and sharing information are clicks away. No matter where we are in the world, we can easily send and receive massive amount of data to any person we want to, as long as they’re online. And through this advancement, technology has introduced a lot of lifestyle changes that defined how we do things, thus, one of these is telecommuting.

Telecommuting is the process of eliminating the regular routine of commuting to work. For most workers who have been used to traditional work setup, this can be a different approach. However, telecommuting is not really a new thing but it can’t be totally embraced by all employers and workers because as much as it has its pros, there are still pitfalls to this so-called “anywhere is my office” philosophy.

If you have the luxury of being offered a telecommuting job, weigh your priorities first before saying yes. Though this setup is nice to have but would not work with your current situation, you end up being more emotionally stressed than happy. To help you more with your decision, we have listed top things you should know about telecommuting jobs.

·        Home is your office. Though you have the option to work in a coffee shop, public library, or anywhere with Wi-Fi connection, your home serves as your most efficient substitute-office. To avoid mixing your personal time and space with work, build a home-office area where you can do tasks, manage paper works, and deal with clients.

·        You own your time. This is more of a perk than a threat. But if you think about it, you will need tons of self-discipline and organizational skills to keep up with your planned schedule. It can be a total disaster if you fall short of handling your deliverables and client expectations.

·        No one can monitor your progress. Unlike traditional corporate jobs where your boss conducts mid-year evaluation to track your career progress, clients wouldn’t care much about you as long as you deliver your output. To make sure your skills are not becoming stagnant, use the web to update your skills or much better, learn a new one.

·        Goodbye employee benefits. One of the advantages of traditional work setup is having an employer who is mandated to give you compensation packages like health care, insurance, yearend bonuses, etc. So if you’re currently a freelance or contractual worker in telecommuting setup, it’s time to care about your future, get you own medical and retirement insurance while you’re earning big.
